I just opened a note from Yuri Shimojo an artist whose work has profoundly affected what I do mand one of the stars of The Colour of Ink. She talked a bit about all the kinds of mothers in the world. She talked about artist as mother, companion animal as child and mother, creation as birth and all the sadnesses and joys that go into that word mother. I have so many mothers to thank today. For so many years my sisters and brother were my mother, for so many years my Papa was my Mama for so many times the earth and trees and vines were my mother, sometimes poets and words and pictures and ink held me like a mother. And friends! Lucky found and chosen kin. I want to suggest to rename Mother’s Day “mothers” day. So many of you everywhere. Yuri also asked it I could make a gift subscription for her friend Virginia who showed her motherhoods many forms. And at first I just wanted to give it for free to her because I love a free exchange but this newsletter takes me time and I want to keep doing it and every little seven Canadian dollar a month subscription helps me have time to work on recipes and experiments and writings spreading a kind of care that is as good as taking your mom to brunch I hope. So this button is for all the kinds of children and all the kinds of mothers.
I found this illustration I did for the New York Times I think it was the first or second I ever did and it even sparked a debate among the elite illustrators I was hanging out with in New York about if you have to even know how to draw to be an illustrator. Today of all days though it seems just perfect. And even if you can’t afford a gift subscription I’d love to hear who you mother is..

This post is so apt! I have just been sketching dandelions in my local park fir an idea I am working on. You illustrations is so well observed. Drawing is just a way if seeing as Berger said. X
Thank you for sharing. My mom just turned 83, recently (she’s one day older than my dad). I have learned compassion + empathy from her - I’m grateful 🤍
